Written partly in France while Thomas Paine expected arrest after clashing with Robespierre, and continued during his confinement in Luxembourg, The Age of Reason makes the case for deism: belief in a creator God known through reason and nature rather than revelation. Paine treats the Bible as ordinary literature instead of inspired text, rejects miracles, and sets the four gospel accounts side by side to expose their inconsistencies. He also attacks the church for chasing political power. Issued in three parts from 1794 as cheap unbound pamphlets, it sold widely in the United States and sparked a deist revival, while the British government prosecuted the printers and booksellers who spread it.
