About the book
A secret government report is the form Michael Crichton chose for his 1969 techno-thriller, complete with text-based computer images showing the results of tests on an unknown organism. It was the sixth novel he wrote and the first published under his real name. A military satellite built to gather microorganisms from the upper atmosphere falls back to Earth, and within hours nearly everyone in Piedmont, the town nearest the landing site, is dead. The base's duty officer suspects contamination from space and calls for Wildfire, a protocol that brings together a government-backed team of scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Stone. The novel reached The New York Times best seller list and established Crichton as a genre writer.
Andrej Karpathy described it as bio-heavy hard science fiction about a first contact with an alien microscopic organism, written in an era otherwise fixated on space.

An alien microscopic organism makes first contact with humans and it ain't pretty. A bio-heavy hard sci-fi all the way from 1969, an era that was otherwise decidedly all about space.
