About the book
Volume 9, Part I of Carl Jung's Collected Works gathers essays on the collective unconscious, a layer of the psyche he held to be shared by all humanity and expressed in universal symbols and archetypal images. Essays on the psychology of rebirth, the child archetype, the Kore, the trickster figure and the spirit in fairytales examine particular figures, with examples from mythology, religion, folklore, dreams and alchemy. Others address conscious and unconscious, individuation, with a study of the process, and mandala symbolism. Among the archetypes Jung discusses are the Child, the Shadow and the Self, and he connects these symbolic patterns with transformation and inner growth.
