About the book

Poet and critic Maggie Nelson mixes memoir with philosophical theory in The Argonauts, a work of autotheory. At its center are her relationship with Harry Dodge, a transgender artist, and her pregnancy with her son, Iggy. Around that story she writes about a parent's death, academia, transgender embodiment, family and the limits of language, engaging critically with Judith Butler, Gilles Deleuze, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and other thinkers. The text moves in non-chronological vignettes interspersed with quotations. Its title borrows Roland Barthes's comparison of love to an Argonaut replacing parts of a ship that keeps its name. It won the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism.

Emma Watson included it on the read shelf of her Our Shared Shelf list.
