About the book
Niall Ferguson, then a Harvard professor, traces how money, credit and banking developed over centuries and argues that financial history is the backstory to all history. His six chapters move through Pizarro and the use of gold and silver as currency, bond trading in Renaissance Italy and the Rothschild fortune, stock market bubbles from the Mississippi scheme to Enron, insurance from Lloyd's coffee house to Hurricane Katrina, housing as an investment, and the economic ties between the United States and China. An afterword addresses the 2008 financial crisis. The 2008 book became a television documentary for Channel 4 and PBS that won an International Emmy.
Former Coca-Cola chief executive Muhtar Kent told Fox Business that he loves books on economic observations and called it one of the best.
