About the book
Set in Ireland after the financial crash, Paul Murray's 2023 novel follows the once wealthy Barnes family. Dickie's car business, once lucrative, is failing, yet with a survivalist handyman he is out in the woods building a bunker meant to survive the apocalypse. Imelda, his wife, sells her jewelry on eBay, their daughter Cass, formerly top of her class, is drinking her way toward her final exams, and PJ, aged twelve, is planning to run away from home. Each of the four family members gets a portion of the novel. It took Murray about five years to write, reached the Booker Prize shortlist and took both the overall Nero Gold Prize and An Post's Irish Book of the Year award.
Dua Lipa made it her Service95 Book Club monthly read for February 2025.
