About the book

Bill Bryson's second work of popular science, after A Short History of Nearly Everything, turns to the human body: how it works, how well it heals itself and the ways it can fail. Following a short introduction, each chapter takes one part of the body, while two chapters deal with disease. Within each, Bryson explains what the relevant system does and traces the history of the scientific discoveries behind present understanding, in his familiar humorous style. The Guardian and The Independent both reviewed it warmly, the latter for its wide range of facts. Published in 2019, it reached the New York Times best seller list.

Morgan Housel rates it as probably the strongest thing Bryson has written and among the most useful science books he knows, in effect an anatomy textbook from a great storyteller.

The Body. Probably Bill Bryson’s best work, and one of the most practical science books I’ve read. Effectively an anatomy textbook written by one of the great storytellers of our time.
