About the book
Theodore M. Bernstein's guide to English usage is a handbook of more than 2,000 alphabetized entries on the problems that should give a writer pause: grammar, punctuation, meaning, use, precision, logical structure and color. Time called it The Compleat Bernstein, and it was his major work on usage. It was published in 1965.
Writing in Newsweek about his five most important books, Steven Pinker said he never expected a style manual to make him laugh.
