About the book
Set within a French airborne battalion, Jean Lartéguy's novel follows its officers through the First Indochina War, the Algerian War and the Suez Crisis. As a prisoner of war in a notorious camp in Indochina, the officer Pierre Raspéguy studies how his Viet Minh captors wage war, both militarily and politically. The novel asks how soldiers should fight once the age of heroics is over, and it weighs the guerrilla methods Raspéguy studies against the ideals of just war. It won the 1960 Prix Ève Delacroix and was filmed as Lost Command.
