The Chrysalids

Set in a future after a catastrophe its survivors call the Tribulation, John Wyndham's science fiction novel takes place in a frontier farming settlement in what was once Labrador. Its devout people hold that keeping humans, animals and crops perfectly normal is God's will: unusual plants are burned, and people with even small mutations are cast out to the lawless Fringes. David Strorm, son of the community's most pious man, dreams of great cities and horseless carts. As he grows up, he learns that he and a few other children share a hidden ability to speak to each other by thought, a difference that could doom them. Published in 1955, it was later adapted for radio and the stage.
