Set on the Discworld, a flat planet borne through space by four elephants on the back of the star turtle Great A'Tuin, Terry Pratchett's comic fantasy begins in Ankh-Morpork, the disc's largest city. Rincewind, a cynical and largely incompetent wizard, is hired to guide Twoflower, a naive insurance clerk from the Agatean Empire and the world's first tourist. Gold is so plentiful in his homeland that the clerk is immensely rich by local standards, and the Patrician forces Rincewind to keep him alive so his death does not provoke an Agatean invasion. Thieves and mercenaries stand in the way. Published in 1983, it opens the Discworld series, and its first British printing ran to only 506 copies.
Dave Child, founder of Readable.io, said that realizing Discworld was satire sent him back to read the whole series from this first novel onward, and he has not missed a book since.

I think if I had to pick a favourite then, it would be Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett. That was the first Discworld book I read where I realised there was another level to it - that Discworld was satirical. I went back and started reading the whole collection from The Colour of Magic onwards, and haven't missed one since.
