About the book
The Lamberts of St. Jude, a Midwestern suburb, sit at the center of Jonathan Franzen's novel. Alfred, a rigid former railroad engineer, has Parkinson's disease and is sliding into dementia, while his wife Enid tries to steer the lives of their three grown children on the East Coast. Gary is a Philadelphia banker growing depressed and drinking, Chip is a former professor stuck on a screenplay in New York, and Denise is a rising chef. Enid's goal is to bring them all home for one last Christmas. The story moves back and forth across the late 20th century. Its honors include a National Book Award and, a year later, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
It appears on Oprah's Book Club list, and Oprah Winfrey praised it as a comic, tragic and humane novel about a family breaking down.

The Correctionsis a grandly entertaining novel for the new century —a comic, tragic masterpiece about a family breaking down in an age of easy fixes. Richly realistic, darkly hilarious and deeply humane, it confirms that Jonathan Franzen is one of our most brilliant interpreters of American society and American soul
