About the book
In the late 1930s, Manley Halliday, a novelist who was a golden figure of the 1920s, has been forgotten by the literary world and is writing for the film industry in Hollywood. Budd Schulberg's 1950 novel pairs him with Shep, a screenwriter in his twenties who idolizes him, on a script about a winter festival at a college. The two are sent to New York, and Halliday is fighting alcoholism and the pull of memories of happier times. The story draws in part on Schulberg's own ill-fated writing assignment with F. Scott Fitzgerald, reportedly on the film Winter Carnival. Schulberg and Harvey Breit later adapted it for the Broadway stage.
Ryan Holiday put it on his list of 42 books for young and ambitious men, describing it as a fictional portrait, seen by an admiring friend, of a great writer's fall.
