About the book
Laila Lalami sets her literary science fiction novel in a near future in which the state monitors dreams. Returning to Los Angeles from a trip abroad, Sara Hussein, a Moroccan American woman, is stopped at the airport by agents of the Risk Assessment Administration. Its algorithm, fed with data from her dreams, has judged her an imminent danger to her husband, and she is sent to a retention center for twenty-one days of observation. There she lives among other detained dreamers, all women trying to prove their innocence. The novel was longlisted for the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction.
