Journalist David Halberstam, a Pulitzer Prize winner for his reporting on the Vietnam War, turns to Bill Belichick and the game he coaches. Halberstam was struck by how un-coachlike Belichick seemed: not charismatic and making no attempt to be, yet always a step ahead of everyone else. He traces how Belichick, set apart by his Wesleyan education, came to approach coaching differently from anyone else in the NFL, and what drives him both on and off the field. Belichick's 31 years in the league, with the Giants, in Cleveland and then with the Patriots, had by then brought Super Bowl wins that put him past Vince Lombardi.

In 2014, I read The Education of a Coach, a book about Bill Belichick which influenced me immensely (coincidentally, the Patriots have also read my book and were influenced by it).

The first one is gentler with the coach, because the author had access to him personally. It also has only the first two Superbowls, because it stops in 2003. This means the writer didn’t know about the 2 biggest scandals that involved Belichick: Spygate and Deflategate.
