About the book
Ronald Bailey, science correspondent for Reason magazine, argues that the many forecasts of environmental doom made over the past five decades have been proven wrong, while those betting on human ingenuity have nearly always been proven right. Twenty years after his earlier book Ecoscam, he weighs the prospects for people and the planet's biosphere and finds many ecological trends positive: falling cancer incidence in the United States, a likely decline in world population by mid-century, farmland reverting to nature as agricultural land use peaks, and a link between rising national wealth and falling air and water pollution. He treats global warming as a real problem but argues that clean energy could soon cost less than fossil fuels.
Steven Pinker recommended it in The Guardian among books to make readers optimists.
