About the book
Born in 1207, Jalal al-Din Rumi was a scholar and teacher until the age of 37, when he met the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz. That friendship changed his life, and after Shams disappeared Rumi turned from scholarship to poetry. Coleman Barks gathers the core of the Sufi mystic's verse in English translation, with poems on silence, emptiness and bewilderment as well as majesty, elegance and flirtation. A revised and expanded edition adds a new introduction by Barks and more than 80 poems not published before. The selection is meant for devoted readers of Rumi and first-timers alike.
Women for Women International founder Zainab Salbi says the poems speak honestly about every human emotion and always give her perspective in daily life.

Zainab Salbi (Founder/Women for Women International)
It’s a book of poetry by a 13th-century Sufi poet who talks in most honest and transparent ways of all human emotions. The poems never failed to bring perspective in my daily life. And it always creates an immediate connection when I meet someone who has read it.
