About the book

Set in British India, M. M. Kaye's 1978 novel follows Ashton Pelham-Martyn, the son of an English botanist, born on the road in 1852 and orphaned young. After the uprising of 1857, his Hindu ayah Sita raises him as a native boy named Ashok in the kingdom of Gulkote, where he befriends the neglected princess Anjuli. Educated and trained for the army in England, he comes back to serve as a Corps of Guides officer, torn between his status as a British sahib and the Indian boy he once believed he was. The novel tells of his dangerous love for the princess and of divided loyalties. It inspired a television series and a musical.

James Mattis included it on the list of favorite books in an appendix to Call Sign Chaos.
