About the book
John Grisham's second book, a legal thriller from 1991, follows Mitch McDeere, a Harvard Law School graduate who finished third in his class, as he joins Bendini, Lambert and Locke, a small Memphis practice specializing in tax law. The firm leases him a BMW, pays off his school loans, arranges a mortgage and hires a decorator for him and his wife, Abby. His older brother Ray is serving fifteen years in a Tennessee jail. It was the first Grisham novel to gain wide popularity, was adapted in 1993 as a film with Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman, and got a sequel, The Exchange, in October 2023.
Mel Robbins said it was the first fast-paced thriller she ever read, and that discovering a whole new genre through it amazed her.
