About the book
Vikram Seth's first novel is told entirely in verse, 590 fourteen-line Onegin stanzas in iambic tetrameter, a form Seth took from Charles Johnston's English version of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. In 1980s San Francisco, John Brown is a successful but lonely computer executive in Silicon Valley. His friend and former girlfriend Janet Hayakawa, a sculptor and drummer in a band called Liquid Sheep, mischievously places a personal ad in the newspaper on his behalf, and it is answered by Liz Dorati, a lawyer from a family of wine growers. Seth wrote it while a graduate student in economics at Stanford, and it was a bestseller in 1986.
Mohnish Pabrai calls it a wonderful read and singles out its verse form.
