About the book
Doris Lessing's novel centres on Anna Wulf, a writer with one successful novel behind her, who keeps her life in four notebooks of different colours. The black one returns to her years in Southern Rhodesia around World War II, the red records her time in the Communist Party, the yellow holds a novel drawn from the end of her own love affair, and the blue is a personal diary. These sections alternate with Free Women, a seemingly realistic narrative about Anna, her friend Molly Jacobs and their children, former husbands and lovers. Anna tries to bring the threads together in a fifth, golden notebook. In 2005 TIME counted the 1962 novel among the 100 best novels in English since 1923.
Barack Obama included it in a list of books he recommended to his daughter Malia, which he gave to The New York Times.
