About the book
Donna Tartt's novel is narrated in retrospect by Theo Decker. When he is thirteen, a bomb at the Metropolitan Museum of Art kills his mother and leaves him in possession of The Goldfinch, a small painting by Carel Fabritius. Abandoned by his father, Theo moves in with a school friend's wealthy family on Park Avenue, unsettled by classmates who cannot talk to him and by grief for his mother. Tartt has said the Taliban's destruction of the Buddha statues at Bamiyan in 2001 partly inspired the book. The novel received the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

More modern, I recently read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and I love the way it was written. A great story brought to life with long, descriptive, sometimes frenetic sentences. She paints some scenes and some ideas that are unlike anything I've ever read. It's like watching magic on the page.
