About the book
Pearl S. Buck's novel follows Wang Lung, a farmer in an early 20th-century Chinese village, from the day he marries O-Lan, a slave in the wealthy House of Hwang. The couple work their fields and save to buy land one plot at a time from the Hwang family nearby. Buck grew up in China and drew on her own observation of village life. Published in 1931, it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and opens her House of Earth trilogy.
