About the book
The building of the Panama Canal, said to be the greatest engineering feat in history, is the backdrop of Cristina Henriquez's novel. Francisco, a fisherman angry at the foreign powers grabbing at Panama, is upset when his son Omar, raised in quiet loneliness, takes a job as a digger in the excavation zone. Ada Bunting, a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados, arrives in Panama as a stowaway among thousands of West Indians seeking work, hoping to earn enough for her ailing sister's surgery. When Omar collapses after a grueling shift, she alone rushes to help. John Oswald, a scientist set on eliminating malaria, sees her courage and hires her to care for his sick wife, Marian.
