About the book

The British raid on the German-held port of St Nazaire on 28 March 1942, known as Operation Chariot, is the subject of C. E. Lucas Phillips's account. The plan was to smash a ship, supported by seventeen wooden motor launches, into the lock gates of the Normandie Dock, then the largest dock in the world. Under heavy German fire the commandos stormed the docks and achieved their main demolition objectives within half an hour, but the Royal Navy lost nearly all the small boats meant to take them back to England, leaving the men to fight through the town. Phillips drew on British, French and German eyewitnesses. Five Victoria Crosses were awarded for the raid.

James Mattis included it on the list of favorite books in an appendix to Call Sign Chaos.
