About the book
Angie Thomas's debut young adult novel is narrated by Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old black girl who lives in Garden Heights, a poor neighborhood, and attends Williamson Prep, a mostly white private school in an affluent part of the city. She balances the two worlds uneasily until she sees a white police officer fatally shoot her unarmed childhood best friend, Khalil, while he is driving her home from a party. Thomas grew the novel out of a college short story written in response to the police shooting of Oscar Grant. It debuted at number one on the young adult best seller list of the New York Times and stayed there for 50 weeks, and 20th Century Fox filmed it in 2018.
