About the book
Philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah argues that the sweeping moral revolutions of the last few centuries, which brought freedom and equal rights to women, slaves and other oppressed people, drew their force from the ancient power of honor rather than from legislation handed down from above. Combining philosophy with historical narrative, he examines the demise of dueling among England's aristocrats, the struggles over footbinding in nineteenth-century China, ordinary people's revolt against Atlantic slavery, and honor killing in contemporary Pakistan. Through these cases he presents honor as a force against man's inhumanity to man. It was published in 2010.
