About the book
After a traitor was unmasked inside it, the British Secret Service is short of money, sidelined by the Americans and being rebuilt under its acting chief, George Smiley, in John le Carré's 1977 spy novel. Smiley goes on the attack against Karla, the Soviet spymaster behind the Circus's ruin, and finds a lead in Soviet money moving through Hong Kong. With the fall of Saigon approaching, he sends Westerby, an occasional operative with cover as a journalist, to shake the tree. The novel is the middle book of the Karla Trilogy, between Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People.
Michael Bloomberg admitted that its 600 pages are mostly description with little happening, yet said he found it fascinating.
