About the book
The Society of Jesus, founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, is the subject of Markus Friedrich's history, which sets the Jesuits in their social, cultural and global context. Friedrich describes an order that balanced sacred and secular roles while shaping pastoral care, spirituality, art, education and science. He examines its part in the Counter-Reformation and in European empire building, including missions in Asia and Africa in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, its presence in the New World, and the question of Jesuit slaveholders. Clashes with the Roman Curia and the pope led to its suppression in 1773, though the order returned in 1814, and Friedrich also considers the legacy inherited by Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope.
