The Joy of Sex

British author Alex Comfort modeled his 1972 illustrated sex manual on cookbooks such as The Joy of Cooking, so its sections carry titles like starters and main courses. Alongside sexual positions and oral sex, it introduced a wide readership to practices such as bondage and swinging, in a frank style unlike the clinical tone of earlier sex books. Original drawings and paintings by Chris Foss and Charles Raymond were mixed with classical Indian and Japanese erotica, partly out of concern about obscenity suits. For 11 weeks it was the top title on the New York Times list of best sellers. Later editions added new artwork and safer sex material, and psychologist Susan Quilliam rewrote it for an updated edition.

Tyler Cowen gave it an honorable mention in his list of books that had a hidden influence on him.
