About the book
Khaled Hosseini's debut novel opens in Kabul and follows Amir, son of a wealthy Pashtun merchant, and Hassan, a Hazara boy whose father, Ali, is the live-in servant of Amir's father. Both motherless, the two spend their days kite fighting, with Hassan as Amir's kite runner, while Amir longs for the approval of his father, Baba, and grows jealous of his friend. The story plays out against the collapse of Afghanistan's monarchy, the Soviet war and the rise of the Taliban. Its themes are friendship, betrayal, guilt and redemption, and the hold fathers have over sons. It has since been adapted for film, for the stage and as a graphic novel.
Vanessa Keng, co-founder of The Golden Concepts, said she was absorbed by its narrative of guilt and love, and Magda Marcu of Sailo said she was reading it partly to learn about Afghan culture.

I’m currently reading “The Kite Runner”. I never have expectations from books, I let them surprise me as I get into the story. Learning about characteristics of different cultures, in this case the Afghan one, it’s one aspect I am interested in.

I've always loved fiction - mainly crime and legal thrillers, but there's something wonderful about reading a completely different style of writing from what I'm used to. I found myself absorbed in the narrative of guilt and love in The Kite Runner, and The Curious Incident told me a story from a completely different perspective.
