About the book
Robert Penn Warren's essay examines how the Civil War shaped modern America and why it still holds such a place in the national mind. He weighs the war's costs: some six hundred thousand men killed, economic losses beyond counting, and social and psychological costs as well. Warren follows its influence into domestic politics and foreign policy, the economy, social institutions, and American philosophy and psychology, and he takes up popular misconceptions, including some about Abraham Lincoln and slavery. The essay grew out of his long interest in and study of the conflict, and it uses that history to cast new light on problems of his own day.
