Michelle Obama traces how her style has changed since her husband's run for the U.S. Senate first put her in the public eye, through her years as the country's first Black First Lady and into life after the White House. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs, some never seen before, the book describes how she has used fashion to draw attention to her message. Designers who dressed her also speak, as do her stylist Meredith Koop, her hairstylists Njeri Radway and Yene Damtew, and Carl Ray, who does her makeup. The looks range from First Lady brooches, cardigans and sheath dresses to the braids, denim and bold suits of later years. Confidence, she concludes, cannot be put on.
