About the book
Lawrence Wright traces the people and ideas behind al-Qaeda and the road to the September 11 attacks, starting with Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian scholar whose visit to America in the late 1940s preceded his turn against the West. He follows Ayman al-Zawahiri from his Egyptian childhood to merging the Egyptian Islamic Jihad he led with al-Qaeda, and gives Osama bin Laden the fullest portrait, from a wealthy Saudi family through the Afghan jihad against the Soviets, Sudan and the Taliban. On the American side he covers Richard A. Clarke, the CIA's Michael Scheuer and the FBI's John O'Neill, and poor cooperation between agencies. The 2006 book won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, and Hulu adapted it as a miniseries.
Peter Attia recommended Wright's book in the strongest terms as the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approached.

As we lead up to the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and people are processing and thinking about it in a variety of ways, I can’t recommend this article, and Lawrence’s book, highly enough.
