In Tollygunge, Calcutta, brothers Subhash and Udayan Mitra are so close in age that they grow up inseparable, fixing radios and learning Morse code together. In the years of the Vietnam War and of riots across India, their paths split. The charismatic, impulsive Udayan is drawn to the Naxalite movement, a rebellion against inequality and poverty, while Subhash leaves for graduate study in Rhode Island. Jhumpa Lahiri's second novel was a National Book Award finalist and was shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize.
