About the book
Thomas Mann's novel, first published in German in November 1924, follows Hans Castorp, a young Hamburg man about to begin a shipbuilding career. Before starting work he travels to the Berghof, a sanatorium high in the Swiss Alps at Davos, to visit his cousin Joachim, who is being treated for tuberculosis. Castorp ends up staying far longer than planned, drawn into a closed world where the people he meets confront him with politics and philosophy, along with romance, illness and death. The story begins in 1904, a decade before World War I, and the sanatorium works as a small model of prewar Europe. Mann drew on a 1912 visit to Davos while his wife was being treated there.

It’s a story about young ambitious man who felt in a trap of his own mind in form of a chronic disease. He visited his brother in a clinic, situated in high mountains of Switzerland. Instead of retreating after a week, as was originally planned, he stayed there for seven years.
There are several very bright characters with different ideas about liberalism, conservatism, hedonism and many other matters. All of them were living in a very comfortable reality with a set of rules. It’s very alike to any virtual society that could become a thing in upcoming years, and it’s easy to understand why the hero of the book decided to stay there.
