About the book
Sidney Poitier looks back on his life and career to judge how far he has lived up to his own values as a man, a husband and father, and an actor. He traces his firm sense of right and wrong, and a self-worth never surrendered, to his parents and a childhood without television or radio on tiny Cat Island in the Bahamas. A few years after first seeing indoor plumbing and cars, he broke one racial barrier after another as an actor, choosing roles that said something positive and lasting about people. Poitier also weighs pride against humility, rage against forgiveness, and what artistic integrity has cost him. It became an Oprah's Book Club pick in 2007.
Oprah Winfrey called it finely crafted and written like poetry, saying Poitier writes with the same eloquence with which he speaks.

Oprah Winfrey (CEO/Oprah Winfrey Network)
It's a beautifully crafted book, written like poetry. Because, just as [Poitier] speaks so eloquently, he also writes that way, too.
