About the book
Louise Erdrich's novel is set among the farms of North Dakota's Red River Valley, around a wedding full of desire, jealousy and doubt. Gary Geist, a frightened young heir to two farms, longs to marry Kismet Poe, a former goth and an impulsive one, who cannot picture her own future; in a clumsy proposal she misses her chance to refuse. Hugo, a gentle, red-haired, homeschooled giant who has long loved Kismet, means to win her. Crystal, Kismet's mother, drives a truck hauling sugar beets for the Geist family; at night she tunes in to late radio, has visions of guardian angels and fears for the future. The novel made the 2025 longlist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
