About the book
English zoologist Desmond Morris treats humans as one more animal species and compares their behavior with that of other animals. He argues that much of what people do evolved to meet the demands of prehistoric life as hunters, and he looks at courtship, sex, sleep, grooming, play, fighting and upbringing in those terms. The title comes from the observation that of the 193 monkey and ape species, humans alone lack a covering of hair. Morris, once curator of mammals at London Zoo, meant the book to popularize and demystify science. Published in 1967 and serialized in the Daily Mirror, it has been translated into 23 languages, and anthropologists later criticized it as sexist.
