About the book

Historian David Nasaw tells the life of Joseph P. Kennedy, founder of the most famous American political dynasty of the twentieth century, as the only biographer given unrestricted access to Kennedy's papers at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. The narrative follows his rise from East Boston outsider to Washington insider as a banker, Hollywood studio head, World War I shipyard manager, Wall Street operator, New Deal adviser and first chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. It then covers his fall from favor as ambassador to London, the first Irish American in the post, when his antiwar stance angered the White House, and the tragedies of his last years. The biography was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize.

Morgan Housel called it a remarkable biography of Joseph Kennedy, whose life he ranks among the most interesting in American history.

The Patriarch. An incredible biography of Joseph Kennedy, who lived one of the most interesting lives in American history. It begins: “Had Joseph P. Kennedy not been the patriarch of America’s first family, his story would be worth telling. That he was only adds to its drama and historical significance.”
