About the book
Rakuten founder and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani and his father, the economist Ryoichi Mikitani, debate how Japan can cure what they call the Japan Disease, its long economic stagnation. The book is a frank conversation in which the two work through opposing views. They cover the economy, education, immigration, public infrastructure and competition with China, and propose remedies such as managing the economy with business-style Key Performance Indicators, cutting bureaucracy with information technology and attracting more foreign firms to base head offices in Japan. The son blames Japan's habit of shunning international frameworks. The result offers both an academic and a practical view of where Japan may be headed.
Bill Gates called it a quick read and, while not agreeing with all of the program, said it has several good ideas, among them getting more women into jobs and encouraging more people to use English.

The book is a quick read at just over 200 pages. Although I don’t agree with everything in Hiroshi’s program, I think he has a number of good ideas. He talks about bringing more women into the workforce and encouraging more people to learn and use English. And I would love to see Japanese companies become more innovative -- not just because it will make them more competitive, but because the whole world benefits from great ideas and technologies, whoever invents them.
