About the book

Zachary D. Carter's biography follows John Maynard Keynes from his placid life at Cambridge University into World War I, when he arranged emergency loans in European treasuries and was sent to America to negotiate the financial terms of the war. Carter presents Keynes as an economist, moral philosopher, political theorist and statesman, and as an anti-authoritarian thinker convinced that art and ideas could overcome war and want. The narrative moves from Bloomsbury parties in London to the Paris negotiations over the Treaty of Versailles, stock market crashes on two continents, diplomatic breakthroughs in New Hampshire's mountains and wartime ballet at Covent Garden. It won the Arthur Ross Book Award Gold Medal and the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism.

Tyler Cowen included it among the best non-fiction books of 2020 on Marginal Revolution.
