About the book
William James, a philosopher and psychologist with medical training, built The Principles of Psychology on four methods: analysis of earlier and contemporary views of the mind, introspection, experiment and comparison. Its best-known idea is the stream of consciousness, his metaphor for thought as a continuous flow rather than a chain. He also set out a theory of emotion, later known as the James-Lange theory, in which emotion follows the bodily response to a stimulus, and wrote on habit, which he saw as hard to change once formed, and on will, the subject of the final chapter. The work appeared in two volumes and was published in 1890.
Steven Pinker, naming it one of his five most important books in Newsweek, said James has a witty line on every subject.
