About the book
English author Kate Moore covers American watch-dial painting between 1917 and the 1940s, and the women at three studios who painted dials with luminous radium paint. Assured that the material was safe, the women shaped their brushes with their lips, worked without health and safety protection and glowed in the dark from the dust that covered them. They then began to fall ill, and were drawn into one of America's biggest scandals and a battle for workers' rights. Moore wrote it after directing the play These Shining Lives, and she found the women's names often missing from history books. Its three parts are titled Knowledge, Power and Justice, and it won the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award for History & Biography.
