About the book
When American pilot Larry Darrell comes home to Chicago, shaken by his experiences in the First World War, he turns down a conventional career and sets off in search of some deeper meaning to his life. His fiancee, Isabel Bradley, faces a choice between love and wealth, and her uncle Elliott Templeton is an expatriate American snob. W. Somerset Maugham places himself in the story as narrator, relating his conversations with the characters, and finds Larry a mystery. The title comes from a verse of the Katha Upanishad, and the novel was filmed twice, in 1946 and in 1984 with Bill Murray.
