About the book
Written when its author was 13, The Reason I Jump is the autobiography of Naoki Higashida, a nonverbal autistic person in Japan. Most of it rests on 58 questions that Higashida and others with autism are often asked, each followed by his answer, with short prose memories and parable-like stories set between them. The text says he learned to communicate with an alphabet grid, and his authorship has drawn some controversy. Its translators, Keiko Yoshida and the English author David Mitchell, are the parents of a severely autistic son and first rendered it informally for his teachers and caregivers. It has since appeared in more than 30 languages and inspired a National Theatre of Scotland play and a feature documentary.
James Clear suggested it for readers curious about what living with autism is like, as a look inside a mind likely quite different from their own and a reminder that every life has value.
