About the book
Set on the American frontier in 1823, Michael Punke's novel draws on the life of the real frontiersman Hugh Glass. Glass is one of the best men in the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, a skilled tracker, until a scouting mission ends with a grizzly mauling him so badly that no one expects him to live. The captain leaves two men behind to care for him until he dies and bury him. Instead they abandon him and take his gun and hatchet. Glass begins to crawl across the wilderness, facing predators, starvation and his own wounds, kept alive by the wish for revenge. It became a 2015 film directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu.
Ryan Holiday counted it among the very best books he read in 2016 and said he loved its story of a man who took on his fate in the wilderness, much as Edmond Dantes did in prison.

Revenge books seemed to be a trend for me this year. I loved Michael Punke’s The Revenant, about a man who bravely challenged his fate in the wilderness just as Edmond Dantes did in prison.
