He shows Vladimir Putin drawing on fascist ideas to justify rule by the wealthy, weighs the philosopher Ivan Ilyin's influence on Putin, and follows authoritarianism's spread west in the 2010s, aided by war in Ukraine and cyberwar against Europe and the United States. Russia won allies among radicals, oligarchs and nationalists, Snyder argues, and the rise of populism, the British vote to leave the EU and Donald Trump's election were Russian aims whose success exposed Western weakness. He frames the choice ahead as equality or oligarchy, individuality or totality, truth or falsehood. Some reviewers judged that it overstated Russia's influence.
