About the book
After J. R. R. Tolkien's death, his son Christopher, with help from Guy Gavriel Kay, edited these myths and tales of the Elder Days into one volume; in places Christopher wrote new material to close gaps. The setting is the ancient past of Middle-earth, which the characters of The Lord of the Rings look back on. Its five parts move from Ainulindale, a creation myth, and a portrait of the gods to the long Quenta Silmarillion, where the High Elves wage war on Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, over three jewels holding the light of Valinor. Two shorter works follow the fall of Numenor and the Rings of Power. It appeared in 1977 to strong sales but mostly poor reviews.
