About the book
Hugh Thomas began his history of the Spanish Civil War in 1957, in his mid-20s, before he had published any historical work, and it first appeared in 1961 in Britain and the United States at the same time. The narrative traces how Spain divided against itself as Europe neared world war, with communists, anarchists, monarchists, socialists and fascists among the contending forces, and it asks why left-wing volunteers from many countries came to fight Franco and why Britain and the United States would not intervene. The book won the Somerset Maugham Prize but was never published in Francoist Spain. It was revised and enlarged several times, and a later revision added material on atrocities against civilians by both sides.
Marc Andreessen included it among four books he chose on the Spanish Civil War, a conflict he sees as the trial run for the following century of Western history.
